Virtualization technology creates a level of abstraction between the software and the hardware, decoupling them from one another. This allows multiple virtual machines with different operating systems to be run simultaneously on one physically identical machine. The advantages: resources can be shared, capacities can be used more efficiently, the company’s IT landscape is simplified and the administrative cost is lowered; last but not least, significant savings can be realized in the area of hardware.

Almost anything can be virtualized. In addition to hardware and network virtualization, one common approach is software virtualization and/or application virtualization. Server-based computing (SBC) has already become established on the market. In SBC, the applications are available on a central terminal server or server farm, usually from Citrix or Microsoft. Only keyboard shortcuts, mouse actions and screen contents – actions that require little bandwidth – are transmitted between the server and the client. The central installation and configuration of applications provides better protection against viruses, manipulation and unauthorized access.
